Qingming is one of the twenty-four solar terms in China. According to the "Sui Shi Bai Wen", "At this time when all things grow, they are clean and bright. Therefore, it is called Qingming." When Qingming arrives, the temperature rises and the rainfall increases, which is a great season for spring plowing and planting. Therefore, there are agricultural proverbs such as "Before and after Qingming Festival, light melons and grow beans" and "Planting trees and forests, never go beyond Qingming Festival". It can be seen that this solar term is closely related to agricultural production.

As a festival, Qingming is different from pure solar terms. Solar terms are symbols of phenological changes and seasonal order in China, while festivals contain certain customs, activities, and commemorative significance. Qingming Festival is a traditional Chinese festival and an important sacrificial festival. It is a day for ancestor worship and tomb sweeping. According to old customs, when sweeping graves, people would bring items such as alcohol, food, fruits, paper money, etc. to the cemetery, offer food sacrifices in front of their loved ones' graves, burn the paper money, cultivate new soil for the grave, fold a few tender green new branches and insert them into the grave, then kowtow and pay respects, and finally eat the food and drink before returning home. The poem "Qingming Festival" by Tang Dynasty poet Du Mu: "During the Qingming Festival, rain falls heavily, and pedestrians on the road are about to lose their souls. May I ask where the tavern is? The shepherd boy points to Xinghua Village from afar." It depicts the special atmosphere of Qingming Festival.
